A Technical Perspective of Global Mobility and Regional Interaction: Reflections on the Research Paradigm of Modern Chinese Architectural History

The evolution of historical research paradigms in modern Chinese architectural history has been profoundly influenced by transformations in the scholarly discourse. Notably, the infusion of a global perspective and technological viewpoint has spurred significant advancements in the methodology approach to studying modern Chinese construction technology. By embracing the four-dimensional framework of “technology, history, space and society,” this paper delves into the “multidirectional spreading” and “multi-component subjects” of modern Chinese construction technology, enhancing our understanding of its spatial mobility and societal interactions. This paper introduces a multi-dimensional analytical framework that encompasses ontology, subject, time and space. This framework facilitates an exploration of the spatial pathways shaped by global technological mobility and the regional ripple effects of technology. Furthermore, it uncovers the multifaceted social roles that emerge from the interplay between traditional and modern technologies, as well as the fusion of Chinese and Western influences. By elucidating the ontological characteristics, spatiotemporal orientation, and subjective differences inherent in modern construction technologies, this study aims to provide a robust scientific foundation for heritage conservation practice. It continues to play a pivotal role in deepening our interpretation of values, clarifying technological lineage, and establishing traceability positioning within the realm of modern Chinese architectural history.
