Lin Huiyin’s Cover Design of Zhongguo Yingzao Xueshe Huikan (Bulletin of the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture)

  • Lin Huiyin was a versatile artist and talented scholar. She designed several cover pages of magazines and poetry collections, while engaging in poetry writing, architectural teaching, fieldwork, and historical research. This article proposes a new idea, i.e. that the eight templates used for the covers of seventeen issues of Zhongguo Yingzao Xueshe Huikan (Bulletin of the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture), contained in volume three to seven, were actually designed by Lin. The cover designs use shapes and patterns inspired by Tang-dynasty dougong, Han and Tang carving, ancient jade ornaments, and engravings of a building’s layout. Her work made a substantial contribution to the success of the Society for Research in Chinese Architecture, and her designs are vital to the study of construction engineering and cultural anthropology.
