Reexamining the Dimensional Design of the Bhagavad Sutra Hall in Huayan Monastery, Datong

Abstract: The study of dimensional design in ancient buildings holds significant importance in understanding construction technology, construction history, craftsmanship genealogy, the history of measurement, and ancient science and technology. The Bhagavad Sutra Hall, with its well-documented date of completion, presents a unique opportunity for dimensional research due to its large timber structure, sculptures, and small timber structure from Liao dynasty. However, there are still many significant gaps in the existing dimensional studies. Drawing upon three-dimensional laser scanning data and previous measurements, this paper aims to provide an interpretation of the fundamental dimensional design of the large timber structure, the main Buddha statue, and small timber structure. Based on the findings, seven hypotheses regarding the dimensional design are proposed.
