Abstract: In the field of historical building technology, the measurement design for dougong has drawn much attention. As the difference between the design methods is largely determined by the composition of brackets (gong) and blocks (dou), this paper discusses the dougong design for Tang-Song architecture by analyzing the composition of bracketing components. Furthermore, the paper identifies a distinguishing feature in measurement design through comparison with the design of bracket sets in Japanese Kara-you architecture.
