Abstract:
Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the rafters in the Divine Kitchen area of the Eastern Qing Tombs have been painted green. However, historical evidences, including archival records and early photographs confirm that the original rafters in Qing dynasty were white, coated with a white powder oil primarily composed of Ding powder. To validate this, this paper analyzes pigment samples from key structures (the Divine Warehouse of the Ding Mausoleum, the well pavilion of the Dingdong Mausoleum, and the Divine Kitchen of the Hui Mausoleum), using microscopic observation, laser Raman spectroscopy, and SEM-EDS. The results identified the components as gypsum, lead white and calcite to conclusively demonstrate that the rafters were originally painted white, not green.
