‘Order of Form’ and ‘Manner of Garden’ —Liu Dunzhen’s Architectural Design Practices of ‘Chinese Classical Style’ in the 1930s

  • 摘要: 梳理刘敦桢在20世纪30年代完成的几个建筑设计作品,揭示刘敦桢作为中国建筑历史研究的重要奠基人之一,对创造“中国固有式”的建筑所作出的直接回应和独特尝试,指出其注重形制的设计理念和对传统庭园的持续兴趣,并在此基础上进一步讨论其建筑设计实践与中国建筑史学研究之间可能的关联影响。

     

    Abstract: This paper delves into three architectural design works completed by Liu Dunzhen in Nanjing during the 1930s, shedding light on his contributions as a pivotal figure in the field of Chinese architectural history. It uncovers his responses and endeavors to create architecture in the ‘Chinese Classical Style.’ Furthermore, it summarizes Liu Dunzhen’s emphasis on the design concept of ‘order of form’ and his application of the ‘method of garden’, while also exploring the intricate interplay between his design practice and his research endeavors in architectural history.
