Abstract:
The introduction and localization of modern Western construction techniques significantly contributed to the advancement of structural systems and construction technologies during the Republic era in Qingdao. The realization of the Neo-Romanesque style, coupled with the innovative technological adaptations seen in St. Michael’s Cathedral in Qingdao, represents a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, of practicality and economic efficiency, and of form and structure. This paper meticulously outlines the distinctive characteristics and elucidates the sophisticated construction techniques employed in St. Michael’s Cathedral in Qingdao, thereby illuminating the gradual evolution of construction technologies from traditional to modern during the Republic period.
