Abstract: This paper examines the development of residential architecture in Yanxia village, Zhejiang Province, by drawing upon archival discoveries， building surveys, and ethnographic fieldwork to study five houses built between mid-sixteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. The paper argues that changing values and social status of residents, in conjunction with the growth of pilgrimage activities, led to the introduction of new architectural programs, spaces, and ideas.
