Abstract: Ruiguang Pagoda in Suzhou was built from the first year of the Jingde reign period to the eighth year of the Tiansheng reign period (i.e. 1004-1030) of Northern Song. However, the foundation, floors, columns, bracket sets, ceilings, and doors were repaired later on more than one occasion. Based upon a thorough analysis of the history of construction and restoration, and through observation of signs of repair and mutually pressing components at the actual building, the author suggests that Ruiguang Pagoda was repaired during the Xuanhe reign period of Northern Song and again during the Chunxi reign period of Southern Song. These two restorations differed in their content and methods, because they had difffferent sponsors and objectives of sponsorship.
